These are ready to plant American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) seedlings bred for the size of the nut, they are verified hardy to zone 4. This listing is for trees that are two years old.

In an image you can see a sample of the size of nut that they are from.

Corylus americana is hardy from zones 4-8, in sandy, loamy and heavy soils, in acidic, neutral or alkaline and very alkaline soils, grows up to 3-4m tall.

Hazelnuts produce female flowers after 3 years, and male catkins after 5, if you have no other hazelnuts first fruit should be in 6th year. Since these are two years old you'll have a head start, and can expect your first crop in 1-3 years -- you need at least two for cross pollination.

Like all our seedlings these have been well cared for and have been given nutrients to promote good vigour and disease resistance,

including nitrogen, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron and molybdenum.

They can be planted in the pots they come in.

These are live plants, so need quick shipping options, can combine multiple in one shipment.

Generally for fruit set you want to have at least 2.

Species Information

American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) - Hardy Native Nut Shrub

American hazelnut is a hardy native shrub that produces delicious, nutritious nuts while supporting wildlife and pollinators. It grows naturally across much of eastern North America and is well adapted to Canadian climates, making it an excellent choice for gardens, food forests, hedgerows, and small farms.

This vigorous shrub typically grows 2-4 m tall and forms a dense multi-stem thicket. In early spring it produces long golden catkins that release pollen for emerging insects, followed by clusters of small round hazelnuts enclosed in leafy husks. The nuts ripen in late summer to early autumn and have a rich, sweet flavour similar to commercial hazelnuts.

American hazelnut is easy to grow and highly resilient. It tolerates cold winters, a wide range of soils, and moderate drought once established. Its dense branching provides excellent shelter for birds and small animals, while the nuts are enjoyed by people, squirrels, and many other wildlife species.

Why plant American Hazelnut:

  • Produces sweet, edible hazelnuts
  • Extremely hardy and well suited to Canadian climates
  • Excellent for hedgerows and natural food forests
  • Supports pollinators and wildlife
  • Attractive spring catkins and lush green foliage
  • Reliable and easy to grow

Growing conditions: Plant in full sun to light shade for best nut production. Hazelnuts benefit from planting several shrubs together for good pollination.

American hazelnut is a beautiful and productive native plant that combines food, habitat, and resilience. It is a wonderful addition to any edible landscape or homestead orchard.
